Recently, the Bayview Yacht Club (BYC) announced the appointment of Timothy Gardella as the Bayview Yacht Club manager.
The BYC was founded in 1915 in Detroit, and has become a prestigious organization that people from around the world have become a part of. The club is exclusively for those that sail competitively and has gone through a number of changes since its original formation when it once held only four sailors as members in the club, including its start in holding races in 1919 and its purchase of land in 1928 that would become home to the club. Recently, the club made an exciting move to hire Timothy Gardella to lead its organization.
“After a rigorous search, in which we spoke to a number of well qualified candidates from throughout the nation,” 2018 BYC Commodore, Bradford C. Kimmel stated, “we are pleased to welcome Tim to Bayview and look forward to working with him to take the club to the next level in its grand story.”
Kimmel explained that to find the perfect candidate the Yacht club searched in-house for someone to meet the qualifications for such a demanding position. They posted a short description on the Club Manager Association website (cmaa.org) and the Greater Michigan Club Managers Association website (gmcma.cc/). However, they ended up receiving Gardella’s resume through a reference.
“Over the past several years, we have made great strides within the club that ensures our membership will prosper well into the future. We have some exciting plans for the near future that could not be accomplished without a manager of Tim’s caliber guiding our team.”
When asked what made Timothy Gardella stand out from the twenty-five other applicants for the job, Kimmel replied that the amount of time dedicated to a job, demonstrating a history with clubs, and showcasing loyalty are key characteristics. They also look for someone with strong financial skills and restaurant experience.
In the past, Gardella worked as general manager at the Birmingham Athletic Club (BAC), demonstrating his loyalty at the Michigan club where he worked for fourteen years during which increased the level of membership and demonstrated his ability to lead effectively. He also worked at KW Property Management & Conculty in Bonita Springs, Florida, where he was a district manager. Gardella also managed a number of other clubs, including the Detroit Athletic Club, the Village Club in Bloomfield Hills, the Rattlesnake Club in Detroit, and the Ritz-Carton, Four Seasons in Chicago. Gardella attended the Eli Broad College of Business at Michigan State University, East Lansing, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in hospitality business.
As part of his responsibilities at the BYC Timothy will oversee all aspects of BYC’s operations including its activities, the relationships between members, guests, employees, community and the Board of Governors. He will also implement general policies established by the BYC Board of Governors, develop procedures and direct the work of all department managers. Gardella will also participate in one of the most important events the club hosts, the Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race.
