If you live in the Great Lakes region then you are no stranger to the argument of “which lighthouse is the coolest.” The truth is this is an endless argument because there are so many interesting lighthouses around the Great Lakes to choose from. So, we decided to provide you with a short series of articles detailing some of our favorite lighthouses on each of the lakes.
Now, don’t get offended if you feel that your favorite didn’t make the list. These are simply some of the lighthouses that have stuck out to our staff writers and readers. We know there are so many more that deserve to be included, but unfortunately we just can’t include them all. Such is the way of lists.
Well, now that you’ve read this short preface are you ready to check out some cool lighthouses. So are we, so here we go:
Marblehead Lighthouse State Park
The construction of this Ohio lighthouse started 1821 and since then it has become an important fissure of the state appearing stamps and even on the Ohio license plate.
Toledo Harbor Lighthouse
Believed to resemble a gingerbread house, this lighthouse has welcomed visitors to Maumee Bay since 1902.
Point Abino Lighthouse
In 2017, Point Abino Lighthouse celebrated its 100th anniversary. The lighthouse has undergone many changes through the years to provide better lighting for those entering Buffalo, which is just ten miles away from the station.
Vermilion Lighthouse
Who doesn't love a good Prohibition story? Vermillion Lighthouse used to be a a drop-off point for illegal liquor coming from Canada. This lighthouse is also known for the fact that it hopped across the Great Lakes, developing an interesting history across the region.
Detroit River Light
Detroit River Light began operation in 1885. It's construction prevented a number of deaths, guiding sailors around Bar Point, which had caused a number of accidents in the years before the lighthouse's construction.
