De-winterizing your boat is an important step to getting back on the water after a long winter. But while it’s easy to focus on the motor, fuel lines and perfecting that shine, it’s essential to not overlook some basic maintenance of areas you can’t easily see:
- Clean your bilge pump (for an easy how-to, check out the video below from Jabsco & Rule product experts.
- After cleaning, test the bilge pump and associated alarms/switches to ensure batteries and all parts are properly working and connected
- Test the bilge blower and inspect the connecting hose
- Clear your washdown and circulation pumps from antifreeze if you’ve taken this step in the fall for winterization
- For applicable vessels, clean your toilet systems and ensure parts are working and connected properly to ensure no smelly backups
Though these steps are fairly simple, the overeager boater might skip these steps in order to get on the water faster, but will likely run into problems when away from the shore.
