New software tracks online trade of Great Lakes invasive species

By Garret Ellison, mlive.com ANN ARBOR, MI — The Great Lakes Commission has developed a new web tool to find aquatic invasive plants and pests on the Internet that could be shipped to Great Lakes states where those species are very unwelcome. The eight-state organization says it recently completed testing of the Great Lakes Detector of Invasive Aquatics in Trade (GLDIATR), a web tool that crawls the Internet for sites selling restricted or prohibited species. "While we know certain aquatic invasive species are bought and sold over the internet all across the world, it is extremely challenging to find and keep track of what is being sold by whom," said Great Lakes Commission chair Jon Allan, director of Michigan's Office of the Great Lakes.
