Officials at the National Weather Service Office in Gaylord report that a combination of factors have led to the temperature in the Great Lakes warming to several degrees above normal this summer.
Meteorologist Jim Keysor said recent temperature readings for Lake Michigan are easily regularly five degrees above the long-term normal. He said the average over about the last 20 years is around 69-70 degrees, but recent readings are coming in at 73-75 degrees.
He said 5 degrees might not seem like a big difference, but it is significant when put into context.
"In the scope of a body of water the size of the lakes, that's significant. It takes a lot of energy to heat up a body of water that big," Keysor said.
