The U.S. Congress has voted to authorize construction of a new heavy icebreaker similar to the cutter Mackinaw to operate in the Great Lakes.
But the legislation does not specify the amount of money to build a new icebreaker.
"We would have to have an appropriation to support that authorization," said Lorne Thomas, chief of external affairs for the U.S. Coast Guard 9th District. "That’s a big and necessary part."
