TWIN DISC DEBUTS GAME-CHANGING TECHNOLOGIES

November 2016 Trending, Feature Brady L. Kay

Twin Disc, leader in innovative marine propulsion technology, debuted three new products at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show this past week.

Twin Disc's ground-breaking e-Steer™ Electronic Steering System provides a bold, new approach to marine steering. Avoiding the pitfalls of traditional hydraulic setups, the electronic helm is connected to the hydraulic-powered rudder(s) via wires, reducing leaks and loss of steerage.

The e-Steer system features Speed Sensing technology. This provides helmsmen adaptive resistance, so the helm is firmer when at full throttle and lighter when maneuvering slowly. Additionally, e-Steer offers Dynamic Rudder Control so that the range of rudder movement is proportional to the vessel's speed, preventing sudden, intentional or accidental changes while at speed.

Building on the success of its Express Joystick System (EJS), the company has added the option of a module that interfaces with a broad range of CAN-based digital thruster systems. This provides owners the ability to take advantage of the state-of-the-art EJS and select the thruster that is most appropriate to their vessel.

EJS is a joystick that is so natural and intuitive, first-time boat owners can easily dock the largest of vessels, even when wind and tides are at play. And on a busy weekend, surrounded by other boats, the system provides the confidence to maneuver with aplomb. An EJS-equipped vessel can be spun on its axis or even crabbed sideways with absolute precision.

Also introduced at FLIBS was a completely rethought EC-300 Power Commander control system. The control head now features a magnetic, contact-less Hall Effect sensor that won't wear out, rather than a traditional electro-mechanical version. It senses the most minute lever position and provides instantaneous control over the QuickShift transmissions. Paired with the new graphic display panel, it offers the future of marine propulsion today.

For nearly 100 years, Twin Disc has made boating more enjoyable. The company manufactures QuickShift® marine transmissions, joystick and electronic controls, Express Positioning®, Arneson® Surface Drives, Rolla™ propellers and other quality, performance equipment. It recently forged a partnership with Veth Propulsion to act as its US distributor, bringing an ever wider range of innovative components to its customers.
