The Great Lakes region may see a relatively tolerable winter this year, with slightly milder temperatures and less snow, USA TODAY reports.
The cause is an unusually strong El Niño — a natural warming of water in the Pacific Ocean that affects weather patterns around the world.
"Confidence continues to grow that this El Niño will be one of the strongest El Niños over the past 50 years," according to AccuWeather meteorologist Brett Anderson.
