MacArthur Lock being dewatered for emergency repairs

By The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers DETROIT – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District, announces the MacArthur Lock, located on the Soo Locks at Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., is experiencing mechanical issues and will be taken out of operation for repairs. One set of gates on the navigation lock is not closing properly. The staff at the locks is working to determine the specific problem with the lock gates. The Corps will dewater the lock so the cause can be determined. After that, the Corps will determine the appropriate course of action. The current estimate for this outage is a minimum of 10 days. The Corps has notified the shipping industry of the expected delays to navigation as ships traditionally traversing the MacArthur Lock will be routed through the Poe Lock.
