WATERTOWN — During the spring, an angler who catches a male bass that’s guarding a spawning bed can potentially make unprotected eggs vulnerable to the attack of invasive round gobies before the hooked fish is dropped back into the water.
That’s the crux of an issue now being widely debated among anglers. The Department of Environmental Conservation is mulling whether it should lift its ban on catch-and-release bass fishing in Region 6, which includes the eastern basin of Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River.
