Coast Guard ice breakers from the United States and Canada are working together to prevent ice jams to keep the busy shipping channels clear.
Operation Coal Shovel is now underway. The ice breaking operations will take place in the southern part of Lake Huron, Lake St. Clair, the St. Clair and Detroit River systems, Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.
