The story of Lake Superior lake trout is a textbook study in conservation history.
From a near mythic abundance at the time of the arrival of Europeans, lake trout numbers fell off to near extinction in the mid 20th Century because of rampant overfishing and the advent of the sea lamprey. The comeback of lake trout in Superior has been one of the greatest triumphs of environmental recovery ever recorded.
